Field Operations

The Field Operations Division consists of more than 100 sworn officers and civilian employees and is currently organized with one captain, four lieutenants, 15 sergeants, and 85 officers.  Several specialized units within the Field Operations Division include the Special Enforcement Detail, Gang Unit, School Resource Officers, South Coast Plaza Detail, Canine Unit, S.W.A.T., and Park Rangers.
 
The Costa Mesa Police Department implemented geographic-based policing on January 6, 2008, which divides the city into two areas, based upon calls for service and geographical boundaries.  Each area is overseen by the Field Operations captain and an area commander, who is responsible for the delivery of police services to the communities within the designated geographical area.

Field Operations Captain - Les Gogerty

Captain Gogerty began his law enforcement career with the Costa Mesa Police Department in 1985 and has had the opportunity to work a variety of assignments and details, including: Patrol, Traffic Motor Officer, S.W.A.T. Officer, Special Enforcement Detail, Training Officer, Traffic Motor Supervisor, Special Events Coordinator, and S.W.A.T. Team leader.  As a lieutenant, he worked as a Patrol Area Commander, Detective Bureau Commander, and in the Professional Standards Unit.
 
Captain Gogerty has an Associate of Arts Degree in Administration of Justice and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Organizational Management.  He also earned a Master of Science Degree in Emergency Services Administration from California State University, Long Beach.
